Interests: Services

Deaf services comprise interpreting, lifestyle support, community workshops and support, sign language classes for deaf people and their loved ones, and deaf awareness training. The aim of deaf services is first and foremost to ensure effective communication for the Deaf, Deaf Blind, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing communities. On a more advanced level, the objective of services provided for deaf people is to improve independence possibilities while creating accessibility for participation in society. Individuals, agencies, businesses, institutions, and organizations require the help of professional interpreters for sign language interpretation, captioning, and a wide range of specialized services.

Visual Communication
Deaf people rely almost entirely on their vision to be able to pick-up messages and ideas being communicated by either hearing or deaf people. So, one obvious way to provide accessibility for the Deaf is by hiring a certified and qualified sign language interpreter. Deaf services offer professional interpreters who are trained to relay the information in a confidential, ethical, and efficient manner, without interjecting their own opinions, thoughts, and even current mood in the situation. Professional interpreters have a strict Code of Professional Conduct to follow when dealing with the hearing disabled in situations requiring strict confidence during legal proceedings, medical appointments, and even educational settings. Deaf services are promoted by communities, schools and colleges, on all governmental levels as equal access for Deaf people is required by law in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and the ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, State and local government, public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation, and telecommunications.

Family Affair
Deaf services include Interpreters Services and Community Services for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, their families, friends, and caregivers. Exclusive services and support are also offered for KODA – Kids of Deaf Adults, and deaf kids and teens through clubs. Community services encompass everything related to the social connection made by the hearing impaired with the hearing world. Needless to say that advocacy services represent a big part of supporting full inclusion in all community activities. Another aspect of inclusion involves technical assistance, which involves assisting organizations to find cost effective ways to meet their responsibilities under the ADA. For the family of deaf persons, peer support helps in problem solving daily living issues, which might include the provision of Deaf Equipment Modification Program, which purchases equipment to make homes accessible. This service is only available in certain areas of the country. Community education offers sign language classes and maintains a list of ASL instructors and ASL lesson providers, while some information and referral services offer a source of information on Deafness, important for the education of all members of society dealing with the deaf community, essentially everyone.

Deaf services are meant to make the lives of Deaf people easier and more meaningful. In addition to basic communication support provided by ASL interpreters, services include information and advice, assessment needs, equipment for home accessibility, specialist social worker services, and support groups for deaf people and their families.
