Who is Chuck Baird? He is one of the most talented deaf artists in contemporary times, creating amazing paintings that reflect the lives of the deaf community, on a very personal level expressing life as seen through the eyes of deaf people. The essence of his artistic impact as an American painter is found in his own words, as he explains how being born as a deaf person to hearing parents, made him feel like he was part of two worlds. This fusion of being Deaf while participating in oral school activities, to try to appease the misplaced guilt of his parents, resulted in Baird having insight into the two worlds of Deafness and the Hearing. Chuck Baird is a respected artist who studied his craft at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), graduating with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in 1974. His career evolved throughout the decades, and he says now he “paints not for the result, but for the process”. He is part of the De’VIA (Deaf Visual/Image Art) movement, which involves deaf artists who make the subject matter of their art pieces the Deaf experience.

De’VIA

The concept of De’VIA is giving a visual interpretation through paintings, sculptures, and videos of the life experience of the Deaf and expressing how deafness impacts lives in a positive rather than a negative way. Chuck Baird, who acknowledges that his artistic expression is based on his personal experience of life as a deaf person, is one of the most popular De’VIA artists. The paintings of Chuck Baird have influenced many other artists to become involved in the art world by telling their own story in a visual medium. The fact that language is such an important part of the deaf community, particularly sign language that is based on visual interpretation of sound itself, enhances the value of Chuck Baird paintings that are a visual symbol of how language is processed by a hearing impaired person. The De’VIA Manifesto, which Baird took part in producing, explains the perceptions of Deaf artists are directly influenced by their Deaf experiences, including Deaf metaphors, Deaf perspectives, and Deaf insight in relation to environmental and spiritual aspects of their lives.

Chuck Baird’s paintings are admired for their simplicity of form and style, while the art expresses innate cultural and physical Deaf experiences that are both highly personal to Baird, and resonating with other deaf people who see themselves in his evocative paintings.
