Deaf charity operates to assist the deaf community in all aspects of life, working to advance causes relating to communication and education standards for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing. There are many associations, organizations, and societies in the U.S., UK, Canada, and around the world that cater to the needs of deaf people whether they live in a disadvantaged area or in a more affluent part of the world that may not have all the access services required for a dignified, independent life. Deaf charity works to increase Deaf Awareness, elevate the standard of living of people in the Deaf communities, and play a role as an advocate for more adequate, stringent laws and regulations, including ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act, which gives federal civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It is meant to guarantee equal opportunity in all aspects of life, including public access and accommodations, transportation, employment and telecommunications, as well as State and local government services.

In the U.S. and Around the World

Deaf charity in the U.S. encompasses many different organizations that cater to the needs and requirements of the American deaf community, whether they are English-speaking, Spanish-speaking, or rely on the use of ASL as their main means of communication. NDCS (National Deaf Children’s Society) is the national charity in the U.S. dedicated to eliminating all communication, education, and travel barriers for deaf children and young people. The Deaf-Blind find support through the campaigns of Sense, a leading national charity promoting healthy living, accessibility to schools and government services for deaf-blind children and adults. Mary Hare is another national charity for profoundly deaf children, offering a specialized curriculum through the Mary Hare School. Sign Health is a charity that focuses on the provision for mental and physical healthcare. While many more exist in the U.S., the UK Deaf charity organizations, like the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) is the largest charity in that country, representing 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK. Other UK charities catering to the deaf community include Deaf and Hearing Support, Sense (The National Deafblind & Rubella Association), Royal School for Deaf, and the British Tinnitus Association, among another 140 charities that operate out of the UK in support of deaf people.

Deaf charity provides help where it’s badly needed for people in the U.S., Europe, and in parts of the developing world. Sound Seekers is a registered charity that supports deaf and hearing impaired children in the poorest communities in the world. All of these associations accept donations year-round from anywhere in the world.
